Hey all......I have just purchased a REALLY NICE 99 SL500. One owner, always dealer serviced with 25K original miles....I am not new to MB but new to the SL and 129. Anything you folks can think of to keep an eye out for as far as any quirks or bad habits will be appreciated......THANKS!!

All jokes aside, looks like you found a great car.
Word of advice though, and im sure you already know, but just in case...

Change out all the fluids. Its been sitting a while; and check out the wiring/tubing and see how flexible they are. if theyre brittle or cracked, look into replacing those as well.

Enjoy your new (it really is!) r129!

LOLOL.....The SLK was fun, but like yours it was mainly "her" car....the SL just feels so solid like my SD just more so....I was really pleased by how quiet it is with the hardtop on. I think the SD has a long term roommate in the garage...

I am fortunate that all the above was already done. This was the last of a fleet of 13 cars owned by one gentleman. My shop checked all on the pre purchase inspection as well....even some of the bolts and fittings underneath were still shiny.

Looks like a very nice car. My .02:

If the tires are original, they should be replaced.

Exercise the AC and the soft top regularly.

The SLK's are a fun little car with the supercharger, and the Vario room is pretty damn handy and amazing, but even though I am altitude challenged at 5'8", the wind coming over the windshield was annoying. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the SL wind in my hair while I still have it experience, but the fact that the SLK's visors don't flip up and act as spoilers is a design defect for me. One thing that I do find interesting is that the entry and exit on my 107 and 129 are more abusive to the seat bolster than the SLK. I'm not sure about the geometry, but my hip does not seem to hit that seat bolster for some reason. consequently there is no wear on that car and my phone isn't constantly on the floor ! All that said, the 129 is a much more solid platform. The car is much quieter in all situations. Less road noise and vibration, less wind in the cockpit at 80 mph. As much as I like the wife having the SLK, It just isn't a manly car. As a matter of fact I will NOT take another dude anywhere in it ! Driving the wife is one thing, 2 dudes in a SLK scream "DATE" Like a miata. I know this is the eternal debate on the SLK site, but it is what it is. I don't mind driving the 600 with a buddy. There isn't a gay bone in a 129's body ! IMHO !:D

Funny, I was thinking the same thing.......can't imagine why??? ;)

I too used to own an SLK (a 2000 Limited Edition). As far as Roadsters / Sports Cars go, it was the most boring car I ever owned. What a snooze! I think I kept it for about six months and ditched it.

I personally never understood the whole 'gay car' thing. People should drive what they love and to hell with anything or anyone else. I suppose when my husband and I take the R129 out for a spin (despite that he loathes the SL) it becomes a gay car eh? lol. All of my friends are straight and none of them ever seem to worry that cruising around with me in a little convertible (SL or any of the others) will make it appear that we are a couple. The like riding around in fun sports cars and that's all they care about. OK, philosophy lecture over. Lets talk cars!! :D

i cant think of one reason why any straight male would buy an slk.

if someone gave me one the first thing that i would do is sell it.

i would have absloutely no desire to drive it let alone own it for that matter.

Wow....that's sad to have your masculinity lie in the hands of an automobile. I happen to be gay and I don't worry that people will think I'm straight when I drive my Ferrari or DeLorean. Too funny.

Ahhh, the truth bears out.

You may have just provided inadvertent proof of what most surmise about the SLK/Boxter (aka, Porsche with panties)/Miata.

Congrats on coming out of the garage.

You're one of those people who cant even eat a banana in public, arent you?

Sure, but then they see a man in a perfectly stitched, perfectly ironed suit step out, they're like 'Ahhhh......'

Hah... Just kidding; I have the reverse problem. People dont know me very well do think Im gay till they see my girlfriend. Going to WeHo for halloween every year only helps the prosecution.

Congratulations, looks very clean.

Here is what you need to do:

1. Change power top hydraulic fluid
2. Change transmission fluid and filter.

Everything else - do what you'd normally do on a car that sat a lot.

Call it girly, call it gay, whatever, I still think everyone is too damn sensitive anyway on gays, race, religion blah blah blah. IMO the slk, fiat 500, vw beetle, and the Smart are all girly cars, if you want to call them gay go ahead. WTF Drink some cement with water and harden the eff up.

OK, that one made me crack-up. Well played sir.

Its funny, anything with rounded edges typically passes for a girly/gay car (Cabrio, 500, Beetle, Miata, Boxster, TT, SLK, Z3, Z4, etc). I always thought it was funny that the Boxster is considered girly and yet from the doors forward it is the same exact sheet metal as a Carrera. The Carrera is even more rounded in the rear. Kinda funny. Now that I think of it, most small roadsters are labeled girl's cars. That is unless you slap a prancing horse or charging bull on it……then its all testosterone and chest hair. Funny stuff.
