I just purchased a W124. The seller had it registered as a 1985, but the Wikipedia pages I read seem to indicate the 124 didn't exist until 1986. I have tried multiple online VIN decoders and they say the VIN is not valid. I have also tried to enter it into EPC but it also comes up with nothing. I have seen the VIN plate under the hood so I know I haven't made a copy error. The VIN I have is 17 digits and begins WDB124... Can anybody tell me what seems to be happening with this? Is there another number I need to find?

Do you have a VIN plate on the firewall? This post has a pic of the location here:

I'm assuming that CA and US would have them in the same location. If not, then all bets are off. ;)

I was told the car is imported, so if the VIN on the firewall is a Euro thing I may be in luck.

As for the wiki page, you're right. I should have specified the car has an om03, which appeared in '86 if I read the page right.

If you are entering the VIN on a US vin decoder it will show not valid.

You need to try and find an EU decoder.

I had the same issue when I had a BMW.

This decoder works for my Euro Mercedes.
"Vehicle not found try again later."

Thanks, it was worth a try.

My mechanic has informed me this morning that he was not able to find any other VIN on the vehicle, including in the indicated location on the firewall. It seems somebody wanted to erase this vehicle's history.

I have seen the VIN plate, so I know it's accurate, unless I've mistaken a 0 for an O, a 1 for an L, etc.

I tried it in EPC which I'm running locally. I also tried a number of online checkers, but I don't remember which ones; one of them was linked in this thread. I also tried plugging it into napaprolink.ca with no luck, but I'm less surprised about that one since it doesn't generally know about non-NADM vehicles.

Thank you for this.

I hope it's helpful to you.

From my experience, for any vehicle brought in from offshore, one should also look at the sites outside NA.
As for the mb vin checkers, yes they can be a hit and miss. Not sure why, as I would presume they obtain their data from the same sources? Not really sure abut this.
