Could a bad steering damper be the cause of an intermittent "clacking" type noise from the lower front end? I don't feel anything in the steering wheel when the noise happens, and the noise only seems to happen at <10miles per hr, sometimes at speedbumps and sometimes when I'm leaving/entering my driveway. I'm planning to buy a new one today anyway, but just wondered if I should expect this to cure the noise issue. Thanks.

That won't solve your problem. I am having the same problem, and I changied my damper, but it didn't make a difference.

What's the next item you plan to replace to try and fix it?

You could just take it off temporarily, and see if your noise problem goes away. or, just replace it anyway... wouldn't hurt because it's cheap and easy to do; I just did it myself.

I have the same problem with my CLK. I replaced the steering damper and drag link. Next on the agenda is to replace the weak lower control arm bushings with polyurethane ones.

Unfortunately the steering box is to blame.
