In addition to my "bad fuel consumption" my 1980 300D (130,000 miles) also uses up a lot of oil. I'm always needing to add more. Even on a recent highway trip it used up about half a quart in around 200 miles. And I'm not overfilling, and I only have a very minor "normal" oil leak, so it's not from that. Again, the car starts and runs very well, it just uses lots of fuel and oil. Any ideas on this oil problem? I know some of these old diesels consume a lot of oil, but this is crazy.

Do you "coast down" a lot on the highway ?? Meaning, are there lots of instances that you let off the throttle and coast ?? Realize that these diesels do not have a PCV system so what happens is, as the cylinders are still pumping, they basically turn into suction pumps and pull oil from the oil pan and burn it when you "coast-down" a lot.
