Hey everyone, I posted about a week ago regarding my transmission trouble with my 1984 300 SD turbo diesel. Well, I got the report back from the garage and the transmission needs to be rebuilt. The estimate was/is $3800--ugh.

I now have two questions: (1) is this a reasonalble amount? and (2) Is there a market for these cars as parts cars? Thanks for the help.

Sounds high. I had an '82 300SD's trans rebuilt a few years ago and it was $1800. However, this past year, I had the trans rebuilt, new torque convertor and rubber bushings on the drive shaft of my '91 560 SEC and it was almost $3000.

Where are you located?

My '89 560SEL tranny was rebuilt last year in Vegas for $1800 (including R&R). Your mileage WILL vary.

Salvage yard tranny will be less, but then so will its reliability.

keep looking; the price you were quoted is not outrageous, but it's on the high end of the spectrum. my tranny was rebuilt for about $3000 last year. unfortunately, they did a crap job and it still flares and shifts abruptly. so price is not always proportional to quality of work done -- make sure the shop who does the rebuild knows mercedes.

and yes, there is a market for these cars as parts cars...

If you are in the MidWest, I know you can get a complete rebuild much less than 3800 by MB pros. There are several in this part of the country. 3800 is way out of line.

So the big question is WHERE ARE YOU?

Sorry, I'm in Atlanta, Georgia. Anyone know of a good shop close to the city?
You are in luck. Benzworld member Jhodg5ck (Jonathan) is in your area is a ninja of the W126s. He will know the answers to your problems and either be able to fix the tranny or point you to someone who will do it correctly.
