How can you tell if a lifter is bad? I had a ticking engine noise and check to see if the oil guides were bad. All the oil guides were in place so my mechanic concluded that two of the lifters were bad. I had him replace all the lifters on that side of the engine. After reaasembling the car back together the engine still continues to tick. What else could it be? [V][V][V]

Well,

Are you sure the noise is coming from that side of the engine?

You should suspect all moving parts at this point. Are you sure it's internal to the engine? What about belt driven accessories? Have you run it for a minute with the belt removed? I just got a true mechanic's stethoscope, and it's a brilliant tool. Sounds like you need one.

Other things. Bad lobe on camshaft, timing chain, plugged oil channel to the lifters in question.

Checking lobe on camshaft? I have no idea.

My best guess would be removing the camshaft and measuring. But it stands to reason that if a lifter has been oil-starved for a while, the lifter is not the only thing that is going to wear. The thing that hits the lifter will probably wear, too.
