Back door warning light comes on when shut tight

Anybody had this problem, and suggest a fix?

My back door is firmly shut, many times repeated, but the blinding red warning light that takes over the whole center instrument cluster keeps coming on intermittently.

There does not appear to be any obvious button or switch contact.

Anybody know where the (obviously defective) sensor is located?

Thanks

I can't tell you where it is but I had the dealer replace mine for the same reason. I had the same problem with 3 other passenger doors. All on separate occasions of course. Aren't those constant warnings on the dash pleasant?[:(!]

Al least it is not the ubiquitous "Visit Workshop or I will soil my pants" warning light. Look for a white ball on the door or frame and try a little WD40. Spit and bubblegum is the way the electronics were crafted together. Unbelievable, isn't it?

Just one more piece of pretty much useless electronics we don't have on the pre-MBUSA G500's. I just get happier and happier with my 2000 the longer I stay here.[8)]
on my 2000 (maybe they didn't change it for 2002) if you open the door and look at the upper left side of the door frame there's a little white peg sticking out and that is the switch. Cool feature, if you pull it, it turns off the light so you can leave your rear door open without draining the battery. When i went to europa to take delivery it wasn't working when he went to demo the "pull to turn off" feature... but i can't remember if it was broken or needed lubing.

why your's wouldn't shut off i have no idea...

Hopefully they improved the passenger door light switches though for 2002+ because mine are all kind of mediocre performing... i have to lube them from time to time to keep them working as best as they can becuase otherwise the lights will not always come on (or there is a delay) when a door is opened becuase the switch doesn't properly/promptly reset itself. Wiggling/pulling the pin will always make the light come on though.

Thanks for the comments, there is definitely no switch, the dealer has ordered a whole new latching mechanism (wouldn't a switch have been less expensive?) but I'm still under warrantly so its just an inconvenience.

But I certainly agree about the warning light![:(!]
so if you don't have that switch (peg)in the upper corner, then maybe it's now somehow built into the door latch mechanism. Does your vehicle know if you have any door ajar? Because of how they are in mine, you don't get feedback if one is ajar... well i take it back, the door rattles if on the road, and it wont let you lock them when you park (although it will still set the alarm). But you don't have to fully close them to turn off the interior lights.
