First of all, welcome to the forums canuck1! I'm a Canadian as well (living in Seattle).

Have you had a chance to take it to the dealer for warranty repair?

Sunroof leaks

Most times these leaks are caused by clogged drains. The best way to handle that is to have the dealer blow out the drains with a compressor. There is even a class action for Mercedes, Lexus, Acura and BMW owners to recover the cost of those repairs and for any water damage to the cars. Send me an email and I'll get you the contact details.

Glad it's fixed. Settled case with Audi for owners out of pocket for clogged drain repairs and water damage. Owners got 100% of repair costs back and free damage repairs. Same thing will happen in case we're bringing for Mercedes owners. Call me at 1-800-279-6996 to make a claim. Jos. Santoli, Esq.

If we had access to all of the B's in Canada, I could see a class action suit for the premature rusty doors,.. and the many starter failures too........and why not get the crappy rear brakes upgraded while we're at it......

.Just thinking out loud........don't :surrender: !!!

I brought my B in to the dealership over a year ago for the leaky sunroof business. They had repaired it several times. After extensive testing and replacing all panels three times, they replaced the entire sunroof assembly, and removed the rear bumper and quarter panels to check the drains. It was the drains and they ended up doing an entire interior detail and replacing the roof liner and interior door panels. They must have spent over $20k fixing the damn thing. It is tight now, and only slight drips through the panels when taking it through the high pressure blow drier at the car wash. But the leaks weren't from the panels, it was from around the base of the entire sunroof, because the drains were clogged and there was no where for the water to go except into the car, through tiny holes and gaps at the top of the drain channels and gutters.

Initially, MB claimed that this was out of warranty (car was just over three years old), but then turned around quickly and said that it was a "good faith" repair. I had the extended warranty, but they said normally the extended warranty wouldn't cover this. However, once repaired it didn't solve the problem, and it got worse and worse. MB then took it upon themselves to correct the repair at their own cost.

I talked with a friend that is a BMW rep, and he said all german cars have the same problem, and despite having different sunroofs, they all have the same basic design, and it was flawed. He says that BMW has seen tons of these fixes and still has not issued a recall. They are handling it on a case by case issue, as they think it'll be cheaper (as not everyone will run into the leaking issue, due to climate, where they park, how often they drive, etc..) and issuing a recall of this type, this late, may tarnish their image and cost them $$$. So, they are waiting until warranties expire, so they are not on the hook for these leaks.

I should also add, that the drains run down the A pillar and B pillar. If they are plugged, water will leak out of the channels at the front or rear edges of the sunroof in behind the liner and the roof panel. You may see water (or water damage) in the liner above the trunk or near the rear interior lamp, or water near the mics by the front light cluster or even water running down the a pillars and by the rear hind windows by the heater ducts. The MB tech also told me one way to tell that the ducts are completely blocked is by the venting of the car when closing the doors. I don't exactly understand this, but he says that when all doors and windows are shut and you close the last remaining rear door or trunk hatch (with normal force, not excessive force), and it doesn't close tightly, it is because the air cannot be vented out of the vehicle and likely a drain or vent is blocked. Air pressure inside is keeping the door from being closed with normal force, and when the vents are blocked, the air cannot escape the vehicle. Again, I have no idea what this has to do with the sunroof leaking, but it does.

Vanctour.........That is one nightmarish story......

Is this what many can expect in the future....... I looked at the design (all those moving pieces) and saw that there could be some issues in the future(aging gaskets etc.),
... and that was long before the drains were ever considered an added possible problem.

Sunroof drain leaks

It's an ongoing industry-wide problem that only Audi has addressed because they were forced to. Like Vanctour said, MB generally won't fix out of warranty and that's what we're forcing them (and others) to do. Not everyone is a DIYer and owners shouldn't be out of pocket for a long standing defect which can be dangerous in some models (leaking into electrical).

A suitable retrofit would be the single laminated glass panel from Europe, instead of the opening bits. Glue her in and she's done. But mine's fine for now and drain maintenance is a normal part of car maintenance.

leaky sunroof B200

We have just spent $500 plus for diagnosis by the dealer on a 2008 B200 MB for a leaky Lamella sunroof. They recommended replacing the sunroof for more than $4500. After they cleaned the ducts we still had water ingress evident in A pillar. We did not take their recommendation and are weighing our options.

Also had 4 inches of water in the spare tire well. Tire well vents were replaced $300+.

Any ideas?
