I learned about a year ago that if my fans continued to run after I turned off the car, given that the engine temp was less than 100, they would remain on all night until the battery ran out. So, my simple remedy was to remove the aux fan fuse and replace it only when the engine temp was running high. What I have discovered since then is that, when the fuse is left in, this problem only occurs about once every two months, especially when it rains. Could this be as simple as finding an exposed wire that shorts when it gets wet? Thanks

Check coolant temperature sensor plug for moisture and if weather proofing is still there.
to me it sound like water is getting into the plug and shorts out.

There is a relay that controls the fans and I imagine that it is just stuck. I'm not sure about your vintage, but on my '97 its relay K24 which is located in the relay box that's behind the main fuse box under the hood. Third row in, all the way on the left.

It should be a pretty cheap DIY fix.
