Closing assist

Good news-bad news, the fuses for the system are in the trunk behind a little flap, I think it is #10. Anyway there is a layout on the cover, they are in the middle of the fuse panel. If nothing works, chances are the pump is fried, a very common issue on all the 140 series of cars. The pump also controls the trunk lid pull down, and sometimes the handle, unless the update has been done. The closing assist pump is located over the rear wheel, next to the gas tank. it is best accessed by removing the liners on the gas tank/package shelf and the drivers side rear wheel. The centers pullout of the rivets, then the body of the rivet (dont lose the parts)If you have a CD it is a little harder since you have to remove it. the bad news is the pump goes for 600/700 dollars. There are some rebuilts out there, but be carefull of deals on E-Bay. There are some intermittent pumps, if you pull the fuse it works for a while, but fails later. I heard of one person getting a defective pump, the seller swore it was working.
he dealer changed mine, but also took the time to check the lines to make sure that there were no leaks which would make the pump run longer or time out. There also were some defective pumps in the mid 90s that had a bad hose internally that could be replaced, see if you can hear any noise coming out of it, after removing and installing the fuse. There should be a whirring, and a hiss as it shuts down. This should keep you busy for a while!

$575-$749, depending on your "stealer" 2hrs shop time to replace. You can do that by yourself, unless you are not handy. Search on "closing assist pump" way back smack over driver rear wheel.
