Recently I have been having a problem with the automatic antenna in my '95 wagon. The antenna will go up when I turn the key to the accessory position, but when I turn the engine over, the antenna retracts. Has this ever happened to anybody, and do you know a fix for it? Thanks

If the radio still stays on, but the antenna retracts, my guess is it's the CB. Could be a corroded wire somewhere, I suppose. But yeah, it's important to know if the radio is still switched on, because if not, you've got other problems besides the antenna.

Circuit Board....control the functions of your antenna. And since it goes up and retracts itself back down when you start the car, I would say the mechanical functions at least, are OK. You should still clean it out inside and relube....sounds like you will be in there replacing the CB anyway. Look for a lose wire in the back where the antenna is and check to make sure all the wires are secures in the back of your HU as Steve suggested("electrical issue").

Gleitpaste.

In another BW section there is a guy named Maclare who wrote a tutorial on fixing and lubing the Hirschmann antenna units. You can also see me talk with him toward the end of the thread. He says he "helps people all over the world", but that didn't work for me. However, there's a lot of good info in that thread.

Gripen,

Don't know if this is still applicable but in the olden days I was able to find those Hirschmann pads dirt cheap at a local (Euro) Ford dealer in the late 80s through mid 90s.

However, since cars and antennas have changed I don't know if they still have it. Might be worth a check though.

I should probably do the same since I haven't touched the antenna in a while.

Gleitpaste is not too messy for lubing the inside gears. You're just talking about cleaning up the mast....I was talking about inside the gear unit.

Great stuff guys, I just ordered the lube wipes from eBay! :)
Much appreciated.

Don't know about the Ford dealer stuff but I don't like my Ford dealer as they were really unfriendly when I went there for work on my '98 Mondeo 2.5 V6 back a few years. Don't wanna go there, but the wipes seems good and should be on its way soon :)

Offtopic: Steve, I have an appointment for Monday 5:30 PM to have a look at that E420, the US import, not sure if you remember. Anyway I'll maybe take some pictures and stuff and post in the subforum Monday.

Have fun on your your skiing trip! Breek je benen niet he ;)

Gripen,

We have too much in common. I also had a '98 Mondeo with the 2.5 V6. Actually it was the North American version called the Contour but the high performance SVT version. In Europe, that car was known as the Mondeo ST200.

Great engine, thanks to the R&D put into it by Porsche. It loves to rev. I think on mine red line started at 8000. A unique breed at the time, that only used half of its 24 valves at low rpm to enhance low end torque.

We have got to get together one of these days and swap car stories. You coming down to Antwerp any time soon. I'm gonna be there tonight to get blitzed.
