I have a 1982 380sl with 160k miles. My automatic transmission kinda jerks from 1st to 2nd, then hesitates slightly before going into 3rd, and finally seems like it is never going to go to 4th, even though that shift is very smooth. It will shift to 4th a little sooner if I ease off the throttle a bit. Is this normal after 27 yrs. or anything to be concerned about? The fluid level is where it should be. Thanks for all responses and opinions.

Start by changing the fluid and filter. Then check the throttle cable adjustment to the transmission. Then check the vacuum line to the transmission and check the vacuum modulator with a hand vacuum pump.

After that the only thing you can check is the governor, which is difficult but can be done in the car.

After that you are genuinely screwed.

Good Luck
