@jackbee I think it's best you take it into a garage. I had a very similar problem, when my gear box crashed I took my car into a local garage near me. The Automatic Man based in Acton, London did a great job at a very competitive price! They had me up and running very quickly and were able to offer advice and answer any questions I had for them. I highly recommend them to anybody with problems with automatic gearboxes.

NO

the main reason you find a lot of "traffic" on the problems is because MB (esp commercials) tend to last longer with very high mileages (400k miles is not uncommon) therefore more problems show up..... its called old age.

The auto box is not made by Benz. It is made by ZF Friedrichshafen who have been making automatic gearboxes for cars since 1965.

According to Wikipedia the exact same gearbox is used in the following cars

1995–2004 Peugeot 406 V6 3.0
1996– Mercedes-Benz Vito
1996– Mercedes-Benz V-Class
1997–2001 Citroën Xantia V6 3.0
1997–2001 Citroën XM V6 3.0
1997–1999 Peugeot 605 V6 3.0
1998–2002 Alfa Romeo 166 V6 2.5, V6 3.0
1998– Lancia Kappa, Phedra V6 3.0
1998– Renault Laguna 3.0
1998–2002 Renault Espace V6 3.0
1999–2000 Renault Safrane V6 3.0 24V
2001–2008 Citroën C5 V6 3.0
2004–2010 Peugeot 407 2.2i
2003–2006 Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD(244 Baumuster)

I am fairly sure that the gearbox is the same. The gear ratios are possibly different so the speedometer may not be accurate

I've a 2000 e320 with a auto box fault. I can drive about 4 miles with a faultless gearbox. Then the box will only stay in 1st for a while. Then the box gives up and only the revs increase with no movement. If I stop for 5 minutes the process repeats. Any ideas please ?

Need urgent help.
I have Mercedes Vito 2004 auto trans with 296k high km south Africa.
Van started viberation last month during early morning and very slight when going uphill. Went to local mech he told me to change engine and gear box mount. After changing all three mounts still has same problem, being told again to change propshaft done that still same. Mech said it could be drive shaft done still same problem. Got tired went to another mech got gear oil, filter and seal change still same.
Finally went to dealer for diagnose, they gave me a report stating torgue converter slipping. Went to gear box place repair converter still same. Went back to dealer they send me to there gear box independent workshop, they quoted big amount of money to recon the hole gearbox. I agreed that finally my van will be fix last monday they called me that They fix the van and took it for road test still the same.
I am very upset, from day first the van viberates in 2, 3, 4, 5 comes and goes as you press gas padel and when it comes to stop it wants to jump forward and cut the engine off.
Please advice.......

Here is some useless info on the gearbox maker they made the transmission units for the heavy german ww2 tanks Tiger 1/2 and Panther. They had problems only because it was speced for 35/40 ton and used in 45/60 ton tanks ,some are still functioning today.
