Most W123s I see out on the freeways here in town travel significantly slower than the flow of traffic, maybe trailing along in the right (or sometimes impeding in the middle or left lane) doing 45-55 at the most. I'm not talking about just diesels, I've passed 230s and 280Es putt-putting down the freeway. I'm usually doing 60-70 and I pass up these putt putt W123s all the time. I talked with an owner once who was driving in from out of town in his W123. He told me it took 4 hours to get to town, I asked "really? was there a bad accident or bad weather or something?" he said "nah, I just drive this car slow." When weather and traffic allow, I usually do that same drive in 2 hrs 45 mins.

Are you a "putt putt" driver? As for me, nah. I was taught that MBs like exercise. If you putt putt too much, you don't get those carbon deposits cleared out.

I like to drive slow now-a-days. Maybe 55-65 while the majority go 70-85. I also accelerate slowly except blast it out onto the freeways.

I did a lot of motorcross in my youth and as such learned most races are won in the corners braking. I drive my cars the same way....accelerate hard, ride the gears out just past their power band and brake hard.

Yea, I'm the guy you keep giving the finger to. :)

I'll putt-putt in my grave.

on the freeway i go 65-75. the motor just feels happiest at that range.
related to this: has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? if you pull up next to someone else at a stop light, and then someone else is approaching from behind and deciding which car to get behind, they will take one look at your w123 and ALWAYS choose the other car.

The diesel is already slow enough, so I make sure I drive it fairly hard to make the most of the turbo.

^^^HAHAHAHA

The M110 loves high speeds.

I usually don't floor it from a stop but I usually hold it about 1/3 of the way down under acceleration. The M110 has plenty of power when you find its power band.

Curise steady at 65-75mph for my daily two hours commute. The noise level above 70mph makes me to try a 'putt putt' driver but it's impossible in NJ/NY highways since people tends to drive in 'Anger Managment' style. :)

In the case of those of us who own 240's, we don't really have much of a choice except to "putt putt"... :surrender:

:D

I sure love the Euro M110 you can still downshift at 80 mph but you reach redline very quickly. But sometimes like today I just have to breakaway from the pack. :)
are you doing this in D?

Maybe I should elaborate... My 240 is an auto with 300k on the original engine and we have quite a lot of hills here in north Texas. I've gotten it up to 85 mph going down a long steep descent, it's just the going back up the next hill that's the problem. :D

The tranny was find, Problem was with the engine. I floored it to pass a Semi-Trailer while in drive turning about 4500 rpms, I didn't expect it to down shift at that speed and RPMs usually car just accellerates but this time it down shifted tach went to the middle of the RED and then got off gas and lowered it to about 6000 rpms I keep it at 6000 till I passed semi and then let off back to 4500. Even with 93 octane and cold plugs my car was pinging like crazy above 6000 rpms.
