I believe I have seen both all black and black/grey and I wonder if it changed from year to year or whether it was an option in some years? What might be the proportion of two-tone to all black in general?

Depends on the year.

Most pre face lift vehicles had contrasting lower cladding.

Later models in 1994 and 1995 had the availability of true color matched cladding.

You'll probably see more coupes that have color contrast cladding then color matched.

Many owners painted the cladding to color match for a more modern look...

I've seen a dealership claim that his all black convertible coupe was an original paint job, but the car proved to be an aftermarket work with an imitation amg kit on it. He was selling a "low mileage" 2 dr convertible coupe on 20" wheels for over $18k and over 75k miles on it. I also asked about the paint code and he didn't or couldn't answer.

Most of the W124 that are black on Autotrader.com are solid black, unless it's a E320. But it seems like the E420(400E) and 500E had the options more than the E320. At least that's what I've noticed.

First 2 years of 300ce (1988-89) had all black with the exception of a narrow rubber strip that ran along the bottom of the doorand side panels. I have a 1990 and 1992 CE and both have contrasting cladding. That may have changed in 1994-5, the last years of production for this classic coupe.

Beg to differ with you...

The early 1988-1989 M103-12V 300CE had the contrasting cladding.
Contrast color of the cladding depended on the paint color

The coupes never had a narrow rubber strip on the sides at any time...
You may be confusing with the early sedans 1986-1989 which had no cladding, but a black side impact strip.
In fact some of the later coupes had a narrow chrome strip at the top of the cladding.

Yes, I noticed this was only on a few models like the 94-95's not any from earlier.

[OT]By the way, does anyone know of a supplier of this little strip?

You could probably replicate it with one of the profiles on the attached link.

Welcome to Flex Chrome

It's a good product and I've used it to create custom grille surrounds on C6 Corvettes.
