Seeing videos on internet and TV shows with many events captured with dash cams and po7553po's recent accident, I'm starting to consider installing dash cams on some of my cars or at least having 2 that I can take from car to car with one permanently installed on the wife's car.

My question is I want something discreet, I don't want to be driving around with a camera held by a suction cup to the windshield, I'd rather have something mounted directly in front of the rear view mirror and run wiring in a way that it will be almost out of sight. At the moment it seems this would fit my needs:

Was wondering if anyone here uses this one or something similar that they are happy with. Cheers!

One of the young men that served in the Marine Corp with my youngest secured a job as a diesel mechanic at the local garbage company after discharge and was telling me that they have cams installed on all vehicles. Evidently they 'automatically' start recording if there is a dramatic change in speed, or the brakes applied, etc.

He was relating the story because as he was 'test driving' one of the trucks after repair, and idiot slid into him on the ice. The other driver started making wild accusations after the Highway Patrol showed up. The Marine never said a word until the patrolman came to the truck and the Marine evidently turned on the play back and the video told the whole story.

We have been considering installing them on our snow removal equipment.

@Pete S, I have a Dash Cam that I used on our trip up the East coast the Summer of 2013 and the West coast the Summer of 2014. The one I bought from Amazon came with a bad USB cable, fortunately I had a spare. Before we got to DC the 12 volt plug in broke and blew the car's fuse. I found some super glue to fix where it broke but it took awhile to find spare fuses. Thanks to BW I found a fuse layout for the E350 and was able to get it all going again. On the West coast trip the internal battery kept running down which required me to re-initialize it each morning. A real pain in the A$$. I have considered getting another one if I get some good reviews from a reliable source. I have considered a semi-permanent mount in the SL like you talked about. I'm not too interested if it's very labor intensive like the one I have now. This is the one I've got and I don't recommend it.

@Fritha78 thanks for the input. From the reviews on Amazon it seems that overall its a decent and discreet camera, its not all 5 star reviews but most seem to like it. I'll see if more people chime in and I will be doing some further research online. BTW like your new avatar.

Let me know if it works well for you, if you get it. If it does I'll probably try it since I'd like to get another one. BTW, the one I have takes great pictures and holds a lot of data. I think we've got about 35 DVD's from our two trips. Probably shouldn't have saved it all.
Thanks for the kind words on the avatar.

I have been giving this some thought as well. I am thinking on something like a gopro that I can switch between cars. The SJ4000 cam whic can be got for around A$60 shipped looks favourite, I like the 1080p resolution and the 170 degree lens, most cheap cams have only 120. With all the extras it looks a bargain
