I installed a similar set from a different vendor. The quality was better than I expected. The challenge was selecting the wood color and finish that I wanted.

It was a bit tricky to install because the backing is REALLY sticky and once it is on it is tough to get off to reposition. But I am very happy with the result.

I'll try to find the link to pictures. More later if you are interested.

I have used these sets for a few cars and would second the comment about positioning the piece correctly because you only get one shot because they stick tight. You can heat the parts up with a hair dryer to make them mold around parts better. At least the SLK has all flat panels so the fit should be better. The one part that I would not install would be #1 around the headlight switch. I have seen ones like this that have cut outs so that you can ses the labels around controls such as the climate control in other brands of cars. They look bad because thye don't have the factory look because of the cut outs. A factory part would just have the labels on the wood.

Wood Trim

YellowSLK230K,

Your SLK looks great!!! I really love the wood trim look. Just a couple of questions from someone who has never owned a car with wood trim before.

1. Is it actually wood trim?
2. Is this also what other outo-makers use when using wood trim or is it actual wood pannels they use?

Man, these feel like really dumb questions.....sorry......I'm clueless on that.

Just a thought, but when they put vinyl stick ons they spray the car first with a water solution with a tiny amount of soap as a temporary lubricant. This allows you to reposition the vinyl until its right and then when it dries it's on for good. Can't you do this with these wood kits?

The factory trim is wood laminated to metal or in some cases plastic panels. The aftermarket kits can just be faux painted rubber with a strong 3M brand adhesive tape on the back. Shapes of the panels are stamped out of a whole piece of faux wood or any other finish selected. They are then carefully stuck over the factory panel to transform them in to the look of a wood panel. The pieces are 1/8 inch or so thick so they are raised above the factory part slightly. This has the biggest draw back for the part around the gauge cluster because it doesn't look like a piece of wood should be there unlike a panel that gets covered all the way to it's edges. A person may end up not using the whole kit for that reason like was mentioned about the piece over the golve box.

Buellwinkle: It may be possible to do as you suggest but the instruction with my kit said....."Allow the dash to dry thoroughly before installing the pieces... place each piece into position, being careful not to press them until you are certain that they are where they belong. If necessary to reposition, use a hair dryer to heat the pieces and slowly peel from the dash...."

It may be possible to reposition when working with the wider portion of a overlay, but it is very problematic if you are dealing with one of the more delicate segments. I had a problem with the segment that applies over the upper center console section (heater/AC panel). I was not satisfied with my alignment and ordered a replacement for that area. The initial order had to be for all parts even though I didn't want the glove box portion. They will, however, provide individual pieces after the intial order.

Nice, classy look from the photos.

If I was going for an aftermarket kit I think I'd want to make sure I ordered one that was actually wood on areas already covered so the finish looked right.

The nice thing about these kits is that you can change them for not too many bucks if you get tired of a particular look.

My kid's 98 has the worthless phone kit next to the ashtray. In some pictures I see that if there's no phone kit there's a storage cubby. Is that a part that's available and easy to install?

If you buy the factory parts, the cubby will replace the phone kit.

The best way to fit things and still be able to move them is to use some foam bubbles. washing up L in some water and foam it up with ur fingers

Put them on the bit ur gona stick them to, then put some on the sticky bit of the wood, It will let you slide it round, then when its right, rub with a cloth from middle to edge, and it will stick, and be in the right place

But take the stuff out slk auto box and water DONT MIX WELL :D

Sorry BW didnt see your post, yes it will work fine.

I did ask the ebay seller and no, you can't put soapy water between the adhesive and panel. That's OK, just have to be patient. My daughter wanted the wood trim but now she's changing her mind after showing her some cars here. She actually liked the one car that put the silver kit, more modern looking for her.
