While at my dealer today checking on something else, I saw a 99 S420 with 17k on the odometer. In service date is 11/98. It is Starmarked. I drove it, and as expected it is smooth, roomy and a pure delight. I
always thought that big a car, weighing that much would require the 5 liter V8, but the 4.2 liter is surprisingly smooth and steady and doesn't seem to be straining at all. The car is Brilliant Silver with
Ash leather interior and appears to be in excellent condition. The only noticeable thing I saw were the wheels which may not be the wheels that came with the car. I say this because it's hard for me to believe that a car with only 17k on the clock would have wheels that were as scarred as these. They are not pitted, but there are several marks on them where balance weights were and places where the clear
coat has worn off. Can that happen within 17k miles?
Anyway, I have some more research to do on this car, but would be interested in any thoughts, opinions etc you may have regarding this model. I would certainly extend the Starmark warranty beyond the 1 year offered by the dealer - just because I understand
these cars are expensive to repair. I have read Frank Barrett's comments in his Buyer's Guide - this is the car to be in if you are in 'The Big One'. I suspect that, by the 99 model year, all the bugs for
the W140 class were worked out (?).

The 99 model year is the latest and the greatest for the W140s. As you probably know it the last year of production for this model line.
With 17K miles on this car, in my opinion, its freaking brand new engine. If you continue to take care of this car regulary then it will ride as it is riding now with 117K miles.
Iam not sure if the evaporator issue is completely fixed in this model line. But if you are getting starmark warranty and it covers AC problems, then there should be no worries. The lincolnwood loeber mercedes have serviced my car very well.
The size of the engine is something that depands upon ure needs. The 4.2L engine is great, so is the 5.0L. These W140s are made to be long range vehicles. With their huge gas tanks and massive engines, they are designed for the highway. If you are a highway driver, this car will serve you well with a 4.2L V8.
I dont drive my car more than maybe 30 miles a week. So for me the I6 3.2 is just fine. Also my original front grill wont fit ure car as its a different design.

The front grill of a 97 onwards w140 is very slightly different in shape and size. The overall body is redesigned. It looks very similar, but its not. There is a facelift in the front, a new front and rear bumper and the body is lowered than the previous ones.
I have never tried installing it, but this is my guess that it wont fit or if it does, its not built for it.

How can that be? I know these cars have had a face lift, but it never effected the grill or the hood. Just like on a w126 [ my car ] the hood and grill were left alone during the face lift. I guess I'll have to study some w140 pictures and see what you are talking about.
