Twice, randomly, my daughters 97 e320 has failed to start. I do all the usual troubleshooting (fuel pressure, fuses, grounds) and to check for spark I spritz starting fluid into the intake and it fires up and gives no further trouble for months.

I noticed this time a motor was running under the intake runners when the key was turned to on. Sounded like a fuel pump running. I don't know whats there, but the emissions diagram called it a throttle valve motor I think.

Once the car was running I didn't hear the sound on subsequent restarts. Is there a butterfly in there?

Am I on the right track or stuck out in left field?

Thanks!

Jim
