I have a dozen, or so, Benzes from the 1980's. Something that is becoming a real problem for me is failue in the fuel injection system, usually the fuel distributor head, and the rising cost and diminishing availability of other components, such as warm up regulators, etc. The fuel distributor is failing on a sizable majority of my cars.
One thing I have read just a little about is people changing to an EFI system which seems to be controlled by something called a Mega Squirt control module. It appears to remove all the factory FI system and change it with a mixture of american car components (Mustang 5.0 injectors, GM regulator, etc.). The benefit appears to be both readily available, affordable components and better performance and economy. Has anyone tried this, or is familiar with it and can provide any guidance or opinions?

I have experience with megasquirt having converted several cars including my Mercedes Cosworth 16V. I am considering doing it an M104 engine for my other 201 and my 107(s) when the time comes.
The hardware part is tedious and usually takes a couple of months to finish. Be prepared for a long down time.
Just as important is to spend the time and money for a good dyno tune for good drieveability. An aftermarket is crap without a good tune.
Once you have the tune dialed in, it transforms the car to a more modern running one with very good behavior. Its well worth it especially if your CIS is starting to give you problems.

From an ongoing investigation I've been doing, it seems that the D-Jet system looks very easy to change to a MegaSquirt. It looks like it's pretty much wiring to existing parts, adding an O2 sensor and calibrating. The MS seems to be a direct descendant of the D-Jet.

If you do a conversion, post the process and information, please.

Recent info has put a conversion on my To-Do list.

Thanks,
Scott

The biggest hurdle for most people, if they are converting to MS2 or MS3, is fabricating and installing a crank trigger wheel and the sensor for the ignition input.
You could set it up with a single wire feed off the (-) of the coil but it would not be ideal or optimal.
