Why would a 'euro' 1981 have a different battery and climate control setup (including controls) setup than a US version?

My '81 has the battery in the trunk.

I suspect the battery relocation to be a combination of a) excessive engine bay heat from the manifold mounted catalytic converters in '75-'76, and 2) a need for space to mount the climate control servo in later years.

As to the ACC, Daimler Benz felt a need to provide climate control due to the fickle nature of the lazy, pretentious, upscale American buyer. How luxurious can it be if I have operate the knobs and levers myself?

Dave.

Astute, as usual, David.

My point, however, was that the 1981 that was pictured had MAJOR mechanical differences from my 1981. Is the 380 that different from the 500?

I don't think it's so much a 380 (M116) to 500 (M1170) issue as it is a US verse Euro. I'm not sure what you mean by MAJOR though.

The air cleaner, with it's extra snorkel and fresh air piping, is a modification, ala the 500SEC W126's of the same era. Presumably that was done by AMG.

What other differences were you speaking to?

I don't like the color. I want a 5 spd. POS when are you going to sell yours. Was there ever an AMG 560SL (with a stick).

The battery in the 500 is where my HVAC is located. The HVAC dash controls are the older style from the mid/late 70's.

Yeah, those are the Euro penchant for practicality, as opposed to the American need for comfort, differences. Not so much 380 verses 500.

Note just above the battery, the plugged provision in the firewall for the ACC vacuum tubing, had that body been spec'd that way.

Dig, is that a reference to something not automobile related?
Look, I may sound easy and the chance to hop behind the wheel of an '83 500 is mighty tempting but I have standards...Oh who am I kidding?

I'll do whatever you want. Just give me the keys for 24 hours.
