Hello everyone,

Looking to buy a dash cap to hide the nasty cracks on the dash of my 1984 380SL. I've read several posts and have identified 3 brands; Dashtop (Palco Industries), Coverlay, and URO.

My data card indicates that my interior colour is 152 (blue) and would like to match the dash cap as close as possible without having to paint. Dashtop seem to have several shades of blue available, Coverlay has 2 and URO has only one (shadow blue).

Can anyone recommend which blue would be the closest match to my 152? Or perhaps I should stay away from either of these suppliers? Can't seem to find much info on Dashtop.

Thanks in advance.

Call coverlay and ask. Avoid Uro.

Haven't heard of Palco. I bought the Accu-Form through ebay.

Coverlay is the common one but it is flimsy around the vents. On the other hand, the Accu-Form required more trimming at the A-pillar.

I’m in the same boat as you. Been looking at them for several months now and can’t decide. I read every thread I can find on this website.

Lots of brand discussion threads but not many photos comparing the textures, small details like round vent figment, warpage, thickness etc. of the different makes. I have seen some with a very shiny texture I don’t like but no idea what brand that is.

I also have no intention of glueing it down

I got color samples mailed from coverlay and neither is an exact match. I would say the dark blue is closest. Very hard to see in a photo..
If you do order one please take some detailed close up photos for this forum…

Have you read this thread? Dash Cap vs Cover

I’m leaning towards accuform but I’d like to know how noticeable the lip is around each round air vent

I've read pretty much all the threads. I think I'll go with the dark blue from Coverlay with the expectation that I may need to paint the cap for a proper match.

For what it's worth I had some minor cracks satisfactorily repaired about 7 years ago and things are holding up quite well. The company that performed the repairs was a local one, however they were franchisees of a larger company.- New Creations Mobile Restorations. It might be worth your while to investigate this alternative route towards a pristine dash.

When I had my 450SL I bought a dash cap from Tops Online at the time. It fit so well that I did not have to glue it in. Just had to cut the hole for the center sensor. Even the insurance appraiser did not notice that it was a dash cap hiding ugly cracks.

Did you have that shipped to Canada? Shipping costs on items like that can be a killer. I always thought I would buy one while in USA, but never got around to it.

I ordered Coverlay from Carparts.com. Looks like they have 2 shades of blue. I used Coverlay because I used them before and am now replacing one after 15 years.

did you get dark or light blue? Dark seemed to be a better fit based on samples they sent but neither was perfect.

We have a friend in Buffalo. Let me know.
I may take you up on that once the border opens. Although I’ve not yet had to pay duty on any parts I’ve brought across. Parts made in the US are exempt thanks to NAFTA but the border doesn’t seem to look too carefully for country of origin.
