took the sec in to my mechanic for oil change, and to sort out my oil leak... and swap out rockers...i felt it was making a knocky noise on the drivers side.... it wasnt as deep as the cam shaft wear i had on the SEL in 2017

so when i got this car, i had a service record from HI LINE in chicago noting that that the chain looked good, slides were fine, ....this was 3 yrs ago but only a few 1000 miles ago

now those of you have followed along will recall that the sec may have a mystery motor swap back then too from another 500 euro

anyways we have gotten the motor to work great after adding the tri y headers and fine tuning on the gas analyzer etc.. my only issue has been the temp but we know that

anyways now this... i knew this was a possibility but i guess we decided to open and check than end up like this one below

I’m in the process of rebuilding my front end on a 91 560 SEC. This project is going a whole lot better than I expected and all I can do is dream about driving the car again however in the back of my mind I am hesitant about doing that because I know I have to change my guide Rails and timing chain. I don’t want to end up like your pictures.
Thank you so much for the heads up

So I checked out the 500sec today at my shop.

The bottom half of the top rail had broken off and was hanging out where that first pic is..

Probably was there a while based on wear on it. Lucky me..

After everything and every $$$$$$$ put into this car... Would have been a shame.

I should have known better to open the VC when I first got the car

The first thing I did after I bought my 560SEC sixteen years ago was to overhaul the entire top end for peace of mind. Mucho $$$$$$$$ but never regretted. Still running very smoothly today.

i played it cool. LOL

its crazy because on my Sel which we have had since day 1, it has about 200000 miles on it and i believe it had its rails changed 120000 miles ago, and 20 yrs, and they looked fine when we changed them 3 yrs ago... and the chain was probably original and fine.

but yeah disaster avoided...The SEC has come a long long way since the time i made a impulse buy of a matching blue car to my SEL for no good reason to what it is now a proper amg tribute radwood ready car

now the leaking headgaskets is another issue.... new thread for that probably
