Good day folks. My name is David and I live in Teulon MB, Canada.

I am here because I recently purchased a 1979 450SL. As a younger man, I've owned a 1976 300D, a 1976 240D manual, and a 1983 300CD. (wish I never sold that coupe).

I recently re-aquired this cursed Mercedes affliction. I went to look at a 1981 300D for sale locally with 127,000 miles. It is an ex British Columbia car and was very close to pristine. But, somehow, it did not "do it" for me. Oddly, a month later this '79 SL turned up. Not quite as pristine, but a mint interior, above average body, and a good price made me commit. So far, no big surprises...no "hidden" rust, even in the blower cavity. (Ex Florida car I was told).

My first goals are tuning it up, then fixing the vacuum system, and that horrible automatic climate control.

I imagine I will be here a lot.

Yes. Double row on these, correct? No noise on cold start, but...
You'll want to check the chain stretch, and condition of the guides & tensioner. The guides are made of plastic which gets brittle with age and can break, which will ruin your day.
A good (if somewhat long-winded) intro video:
More info than you'll care to know here: Chain Tensioner/Guides Link Dump
