This weekend I'm doing the first service on my 2000 s 500 and a lot of my buddies use amsoil on the beemers and audis and such. I was gonna go with royal purple but there swearing that amsoil is the best.(hell at 11.25 a qt it better be) but my question is more along the viscosity way... I live in south jersey where its not hot and not to cold yet and I plan to change oil at leazst once more b4 winter weater strikes. With thbis being my 1st benz are the cars more finnikyer to temp diffrences with there oil thickness compared to a honda or a ford. I was gonna go with 5w-30 but 5w-40 is also catching my eye to reduse pinging because of how fine this synthtic is. (Note: I'm still waiting on ups and the company to give me my dang owners manual) so if anybody can tell me oe specs of what it calls for and or opinoins plese respond. Thnk you and happy driving

As usual you can expect lot of " I use XXX and it works good for me" answers.
The truth is that good independent tests are not available in US and I finally did my own lab test on several oils till I found the best and most economical oil for my diesels.
I hear Amsoil is having good oils, but it is sold using brain washing practices and that is definite turn off for me.
Suppose some states have it available on shelf, so if that is your case - Blackstone lab charge $25 for the test. Send them samples after present and future oil change and compare?

Why not just use the oil recommended by Mercedes? I think it is Mobile 1 synthetic, 0-40 for the w220.

Like I said I haven't gotten my owners manual yet and mobil one is not a "full synthetic" but that was one of the 3 I was weighing heavly along with royal purple and of course amsoil but on the viscisoty (sorry bout spelling) side 0w-40 is what I should go with?
