I just purchased a 1979 300td wagon (no turbo here) off of Ebay and have been innundated with thick, dark smoke. The car starts ok, but requires pumping the gas pedal until it will idle on its own, and then continues to pour out tons of dark smoke until the engine is fully heated. After that, it still smokes, but less. I'm guessing my injectors are gummed up. Does anyone know how to clean and adjust these things? I have a Haynes manual and the Mercedes shop manual on CD, but can't find anything in them to help me.

Hi,

I have a 1983 and I had the same problem a week or so ago. I disconnected the EGR and the problem went away. However, I'm sure that the 79 doesn't have an EGR.

Check the banjo bolt and clean it up.
I hope this is legit to to do.
http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php3?s=3fb9692f0289be512236448df72c648d&threadid=37284
