Hello there!

I need your expert help in figuring out the current condition of a W211 2007 I'm considering buying. The car is presently being put up for sale by Honda Motors and was an exchange from a customer who ended up giving up their E280 for a Honda City (what?).

I've had this particular car inspected recently from a local mechanic and I've posted screenshots of the reports generated plus recent service docs (at a non MB garage). I am presently looking at this with rose coloured glasses and am about to commit to it. Help me make the right decision.

More car info and pricing -
The car looks mint. It's an Elegance model, not sure of the trim options but this is what I could figure out.
  • 2 SRS Airbags
  • 7 speed auto
  • Parktronic
  • Single shade sun visors
  • Standard sunroof
  • Normal speakers
  • Old school backlit LCD ish display screen
  • Almost mint interiors (beige) and outer paint (Obsidian black) with a minor dent
  • Sound engine and transmission
  • Sound suspension (no squeaks during operation)

Issues I noticed:
  • Glow plug issues
  • Rat damage to engine compartment (air filter box rubber and hood roof liner was chewed up a bit)
  • Car takes 3-4 seconds to start, but then starts up quick once it's warmed up
  • Cracked tyres (local shop guy said I might need to get them replaced in 10k kms)
  • Broken rear ac vents
  • Radiator and coolant line changes in the service history seems like a cause of concern
  • Tons of electrical issues
Note: I am not a resident of the US, UK or EU and hence it is important to note that the car is presently being quoted at USD10300 (converted from INR). Initial price was USD14420. Imported car tax is around 184% in India FYI.

Here are all the images I have for you!

The price seems just about right for this low mileage car but I am not sure if it should be having so many issues? The electrical issues are one of the most difficult to sort out especially in our part of the world considering the scarcity of expertise, the dealership is expensive and they dont't beleive in reparing anything so you are dependent on idependant garags.

The questions you need to ask before making a final decision:
  • Have you ever owned an MB? Why are you considering an MB? for comfort or need.
  • Do you travel long distances on motorways?
  • ever driven a diesel? They are being phased out by the way all over the world but will survive in South Asia.
  • can you source parts cheaply in your country apart from dealerships? I get all my parts from UAE
  • have you taken it for a spin? If yes, how was the engine and overall ride?
  • is there a good independent MB specialist in your town who really know how to work on these cars?
  • do you have the resources (money and time:learning on the job!) to work on these cars
  • are you comfortable with DiY

These were a few that I could think of but members can add more.

One more thing, are there any erros in instrument cluster? Perhaps the battery needs to be tested with load, my guess is that the car has not been driven much and battery may need to be replaced and these errors may go on their own. Take a look at the SAM units for water ingress or corrosion.

I'd personally stay away from that car. It has too many faults. The rats could've chewed through the cables which might be why the car has lots of electrical issues and good luck tracking down all the damage done by them. The car takes a few seconds to start which most likely means that none of the glow plugs are working or there is damage to the cables. I personally had 3 out of 4 glow plugs not working and the car still started without any problems.

Thanks for the insight Azeemmuh!

The point you bring up about electrical issues being difficult to sort out made a lot of sense honestly and the more I think about it, looks like I may just be buying something of a lemon. Where the other points are concerned, I love DIY and am mechanically inclined and hence am willing to get an MB.

There were no errors on the instrument cluster but the battery was almost dead! Will look at the SAM unit if I do ever go back to see the car. Again thanks a ton for the reply!

You are person #3 who has told me to stay away from this. It's heartbreaking to realise that I have to say goodbye to this one after fantasising about my next 10 road trips in it, but I guess it's the right thing to do. If you love it, let it go eh?
