I have been searching for the last hour but have not found anything posted like this before. All the gears in my 91 420 are moving forward even when the car is in neutral and maybe even in park!!! I am still searching but thought I would ask in case someone knew.

I have only had the car almost 3 weeks and it only has 136k KM's on it :crybaby2:

Sounds like the rod connecting the shifter to the transmission is disconnected with the trand in "drive" position.

Can I check the rod from above or does it need to be on a hoist?

Weird... I tested the trans today after sitting overnight and it is working fine. Does the 91 420sel have a electric trans? I wonder if some moisture got into the ECU?

I am going to track down a filter and have my mechanic do a trans service ASAP.

Cheers,
James

Today the car lost all forward gears (reverse works) without warning at a stop light so I guess it is the B2 piston.

Can't really help, but sounds like you could use a chuckle.
Early on I rebuilt a VW Square back rear/Tranny and put the King gear in backwards,
I had 4 gears in reverse and 1 forward!
Was a kick driving... then had to undue it.
Who woulda thought the gear was ambedextris:D

Thanks for the chuckle

Here is the update,

It looks like it was the B2 piston sticking... Just waiting on the parts now.
