Went to get in my 89 300SE this monring that wasn't locked. Opened the door and the alarm started going off. Tried to lock and unlock the doors, that didn't work. Tried putting the key in the ignition, that didn't work. I've got the battery unhooked right now to keep it quiet. When I reconnect it, it starts going off again. How do I unhook the alarm? I've gotta go to work.

Your alarm unit is pobably shot.

Remove the carpets in the passenger foot well. Underneath you'll find a black plastic cover. Remove that, an underneath you'll find (depending on your model) a number of relays and lots of wires.

Locate a black box, about 10x4x2", with "Becker" on it. It will have to multi-connectors, one six-pin and one 14-pin. Then simply disconnect it an throw it in the trash.

I know this may sound basic, but about 20 minutes after I purchased my SEL, I opened the drivers door to get in and the alarm went off. Nothing I did would stop it. I then called the seller who told me to lock-unlock the passenger side door. That shut the alarm off....

Same problem in my 560SEC but it was the driver's door that "fixed" mine and it hasn't gone off improperly since (4-5 years now).

That said, I like Axel's solution as it fixes it permanently.

I was searching while I was posting at 8:30am. Finally found Axel's fix in another post. I pulled the carpet and there it was. I'll go ahead and move the alarm box to it's future home, the landfill.

10 years ago, I would have not been able to find the fix and drive away in less than 30 minutes. I'm still astounded, every day, with this interweb thing.

Axel,

Thanks for this post. I had the same issue, so I searched the forum before posting anything an ran into your post. I just disconnected the black box. I didn't throw it in the trash though :) just disconnected the pins.

You guys know that you could take the right door handle off and flip it to the driver side and maybe solve your problem. What it is in most cases a switch in the handle is just worn.
How can this switch be replaced, and what is the estimated cost? I have the same problem and it's not the alarm module.

does anyone have intimate knowledge (not that kind GreenT! ;-) of the switch in the door that controls the alarm? is it indeed in the handle? where is the switch?!

like many others, my alarm will go off half the time if i use driver door to unlock, never from passenger or boot. i'd like to repair the switch if possible. thanks in advance!

When the alarm unit wigged out on my car - at 12:30 AM - no door lock or the truck lock would shut it up. I had previously been smug about having the alarm still hooked up and working... not anymore. The alarm control unit is in my box o parts now.

seems a bit cowardly though doesn't it?

What? Sooner or later a lot of owners find themselves in your situation with a failing 30 year old alarm that decides to go off at 4am or becomes unresponsive for no particular reason.

We're not talking period correct stereo system or wheels here... courage has nothing to do with it.

it just seems weird to give up on it so easily. after an hour + of reading threads, no one seems to have gotten very far. it seems to be a problem with the switch (in many cases anyway) and switches are usually not that big a deal to clean/fix/replace, but no one seems to try and there isn't a good explanation, that i have seen yet. my alarm system seems to be good, just a bad switch and i should toss the whole thing? every system on the car is 30 years old, but i'm not giving up on the climate control. ok maybe i am giving up on the climate control, but you get the point?

I'm with you, demet. I'd be interested in trying to repair the switch. I think you're going to have to remove the driver's handle and investigate. Or get one from a dismantler to experiment with or to repair as a replacement for yours.

That's what I found when I joined this forum. In fact the very first mod I did was disconnect it since I don't need it here in the boonies nor had a clue how to fix it.

I hope you have better luck than most and figure this out.

seems a bit cowardly though doesn't it? i mean, it's a reasonable system overall right? if it's just a fucking switch that is bad, why not fix the the damn thing!?
In my case it wasn't a bad switch. The unit itself was not working and wouldn't disarm. I'm sure the neighbors were happy to hear the alarm going off while I tried to get into the car / disconnect the battery.
