2000 s430, 140,000 miles. Air pump makes a groaning noise when raising the car. It groans a LONG time when i first turn the car on after its been sitting a while, and takes a while to raise the car. at least 2 or 3 minutes. Car also takes a while to raise up when i press the "raise" button for the suspension. Car seems to be leveling fine otherwise. Is this a sign that the pump may be going out, and if so, is it a expensive fix??

Several possibilities here...

One is a worn piston ring. The compressor is a small, single-cylinder unit that uses a single Teflon piston ring. This is the main wear item on the compressor. You can buy a replacement piston ring on eBay for about $25. Installation is a pretty simple job, and there are several YouTube videos on the operation.

I would suggest that you replace the compressor air filter at the same time - that is just a $10 fuel filter.

There are several threads on both subjects on this Forum, and there is a search function at the top of the page - be sure to search the W220 Forum only.

If your air pump is groaning, it is about to go out. Mine did the same thing about a year or so and got the infamous "Visit workshop immediately" message. R&R'd the Pump, Filter and Pump Relay (Hella relay) and all is well. Keep in mind, if by chance you have a leak at one of your struts or a leak in an air line then this causes frequent pump actuation. The end result is your pump will eventually give out. You might want to verify, no leaks.

Pricing: If you do the work, anywhere from $185.00 for used air pump to $330.00 for new air pump with relay. If you take it to the Dealer, you can almost triple the cost. If you go internal to pump and replace the piston ring as "wallyp" suggested, it would cost a few bucks and a couple hours of labor time.
