I would suggest you forget about an aftermarket air intake system for your car and save your hard earned money for some more useful add-ons.
There have been multiple treads on this subject on the forum and many others forums. The general consensus is that the original air intake system is very efficient and no amount of fiddling with the system will not add anything but additional noise.

Not a good idea fitting aftermarket air intake to your well engineered merc. Leave those thing to the boy racers in their hondas/subarus/toyotas. There is no performance gain at all, it just let more dirt which will be harmful to your engine. Spend your money elsewhere like a good set of tyres.[;)]

Hmm... i see. Thanks guys.

Just wondering what other road legal ways I can improve the performance of my car.

The reason being the W124 platform was meant for larger capacity engines such as 300E and above.

Hence my E200 really struggles with the weight of the 2 tonne car.

Any idea how best I can improve its performance in a cost effective and road legal way?

Start with the basics..

New air filter
New fuses, plugs, Wires, cap n rotor
New fluids
Get it tuned-up
New performance center muffler & rear performance exhaust

Get all these done and I guarantee you'll be more then happy with the results. I might be wrong but check with Rentech. I think they made a C/F airbox for the 95's. Avoid the cheap EBAY cold airs. W124's came stock with a ram designed cold air system. Just change to a Green filter.
