So, what kind of damage could be done if shutting the hood with an adjustment tool in place, to the air flow sensor?

The spring loaded adjustment extension does limit the downward travel, but I have read some places that implied that if the engine in running and too much force is applied, that the air sensor can be damaged.

I can say that using a duty cycle meter, there seems to be no effect when rotating the adjustment screw. Also, it would seem the car is "lean" with the duty cycle seeming to want to stay around 60% ish.

I suppose I need to remove the air flow sensor and investigate further.

The car runs fine, though is *slightly* rough for the first 30 seconds from a dead cold start. My concern is passing smog.
