If it hasn't been upgraded to the newer refrigerant (R134) your system is using R12 refrigerant. Take it to avery reputable A/C shop. They can check it first and then they will repressurize it and add the dye, but it won't be cheap, ~$70/oz. The dye, which in the case of the R12 system, is not water soluble and will last for quite some time in the system. They will let you run the car for a week or two if they can't find the leak right away and have you come back. Be aware that if they cannot find the leak externally they will have to pull the cover from the evaporator and check it. This is a long process and is costly.
According to my shop the after 90's models cars (American and Foreign) of all makes began having evaporator problems because the manufacturers used less metal in the evaporator in their continuous effort to lower the vehicle weight for emissions.
Expect a good $1200 for the evaporator and $1000 for the compressor. And don't forget the mandatory changeover to R134. At this price it chould be included.
