I would like to carry a kayak.
my newish to me 1980 300td has the 2 outside roof rails but no cross bars or the little strips on the roof that protect it.

I see a couple ebay "universal" cross bars but wanted to see if any experts have found good products

I believe the roof is rated for 300lbs, but I think that is on the rubber strips not the cross bars, but I may be wrong. I think the cross bars are to just hold items from sliding or lighter weight items. So your Kayak might be light enough for the factory cross bars. Should be able to find a set on ebay, but they are pricey. I have a set but don't run them on my car, as they are missing the black plastic rings that are there to stop the wind noise. I just haven't gotten around to make new ones, or order factory ones, if they are still available.
