I've read about issues people were having when switching out their stock air filters for K&Ns. Most say its due to the oil you have to apply to the filter. So I'm curious if anyone has tried the AFE Power Pro Dry S filters. They dont require the oil like the K&Ns do so I think I'm going to try them out.

The power increase in noticeable with K&N filters when installed in all of our cars. I agree with the cost issue though, K&N's are more expensive to buy and the cleaning/oil kit needed for every cleaning, adds to the overall cost.

I suppose enviromentally speaking, you throw away less paper and plastic.

Its simply not. Lets say the K&N adds 10bhp, which is probably at the high end. Thats about a 3% power increase on an S500. Its about a 2% increase on a s55. The more likely power increase is about 3bhp, which amounts to dyno variation.

you may hear more intake noise which is giving you the impression performance is improved, but it hasn't.

My experience is that an intake will not add noticable noticable HP or increase the gas mileage. Germans spend a lot of money developing efficient intakes. K&N intake on an american car - everyday of the week - but I wouldn't waste the money on my MB.

Im not looking to swap them out for HP gains. Id like to go with the K&N or AFE because they are reusable. I'm not too worried about the price difference. I just dont want to have any issues.

ok, but is that really a big deal? Stockers are easy to find, cheap, and don't need to be replaced often. The $25 you save by reusing the filters is eaten up by the time spent cleaning them.

I just don't see the point I guess.

From experience, K&N is not worth it, the power gains are useless unless you are racing and the extra 2 to 5% power gain makes you faster.

understand that you want a cleanable filter. I replaced the intake / air filter on my BMW / 540 with an AFE system and within 20k miles the MAF sensor went out. Never cleaned the filter - so it wasn't over-oiling that caused the failure.... I read all the propaganda on the internet regarding the cleanable filters and the arguments that they don't cause MAF failure, I'm skeptical. With negligible HP gains & little (none) MPG gains - I don't think its worth the money (or risk). Learned my lesson - not messing with my MB.
