Before my husband became ill and passed away, he had purchased a 72 240d. The car was running when he purchased it but has sat for over 3 years. I had it towed to a diesel mechanic who just informed me that it needs a complete engine rebuild that will cost 2,000.00. I think my husband paid 1200. Originally. Is it worth it to get it repaired or should I cut my losses? Thanks!

Hi, Your husband probably enjoyed this car. The 240D was made starting in 1974, so your car may be a 220d. Unfortunately with a bad engine the car is worth very little. Even after a new engine it might only be worth $2500 to $3000.

I would suggest craigslist for $1000 and then be happy to accept $500. Some local that knows these cars might be able to get it running again.

BTW $2000 for a rebuild would not even cover the parts costs, so I dont know what the mechanic would actually be doing. Is that perhaps just for the injection pump rebuild? If not he may be suckering you to start the job and then spend $7K total. ???

Good luck either way!

Unfortunately I don't believe your mechanic. There is nothing that would cause the engine to need to be rebuilt by sitting for 3 years. Sigh. Not always honesty out there...

I am sorry to hear of your loss . What kind of shape is it in , interior , rust ? If it is in good nic then $750 -1000 non running is not far off base. Straight to the knackers will bring you 300-400 . Parted out will bring a bit more, where are you located, I am sure there is an active active MB crowd/group there- they may be able to help
