I recently purchased a cpo 2016 c class. It's a great car but wanted to know if I could add CarPlay. I'm not sure which head unit I have but it's not the command. It's the smaller screen with the plastic frame around it. I also have the burmeister speakers.

I think you're referring to COMAND, which is not the HU, but the 'brain' of the car. ISTR it stands for Cockpit Management and Data system? At any rate, you have a few options as far as CarPlay.

1. You can get an aftermarket HU with CarPlay, but this may be clunky and you may have a hard time finding an installer to take on the challenge.

2. You can upgrade the monitor to an Android monitor 10.25" touch screen

3. You can add a third-party interface ( Joyeauto, Unichip, icartisan, & many more.)

For some reason, the C and S classes were omitted from the Mercedes retrofit kit for CarPlay/Android Auto. ISTR, it had something to do with COMAND 5.2?

I’m not real tech savvy but what is the benefit of adding car play to what seems like a system that works with your phone really well already. It plays your music, speaks your nav through the command from the phone. Can use your hot spot, not that I ever would I don’t think. I know your apps come up on the screen but would you use them through the command system instead of your phone. I don’t doubt I’m missing something here. Lol

Both CarPlay & Android Auto bring much more to the plate than MB or any other car manufacturer provides. Waze & Google Maps are superior to the MB nav or any other nav, imho. I refuse to listen to music on my Sirius Sat Radio because the sound quality is awful. I only used for news & college sports. However, with CarPlay, the sound of music on the Sirius app is completely different. It’s as good as the HD Radio. Then there’s radio, i now use the TuneIn app and I can listen to radio stations from all aver, not just the local broadcast area. You can’t do this without CarPlay or Android.

Ahh! Ok thanks for filling me in on that. Fair enough for those who use different apps for music and maps. I only use the basics on mine so the music and maps of my phone do the job for me as they come through the command quite well. And I never change my radio station off what it on.

The MB navi has improved over the years, but it still doesn’t compare to the UX of Waze or Google maps.

I also just bought a 2016 CPO C300. I dont mind connecting my iPhone via USB to stream music through my Amazon Music App but for some reason I have no volume control when I do. Whatever level the volume was set at when in RADIO mode is the volume I'm stuck with when connected USB to my iPhone and MEDIA mode.

(In my brief test of Navigation it works fine but boy the graphics onscreen are 90's quality)

I've personally tried two CarPlay upgrade kits. There's a wireless one and wired one.

Wired - contact: [email protected]

PROs:
  • Easy install
  • Reliable connection
  • Has CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Good install instructions
  • Uses OEM microphone
  • Cheaper than wireless version
  • Default starts in MB menu
CONs:
None

Wireless - contact - [email protected]

PROs
  • No need for wired connection
  • Fast charge w/10W+W charger + USB-C-Lightning cable
  • Good install instructions
CONs
  • Occasionally loses connection
  • Have to install an extra microphone
  • More expensive than wired version
  • No Android Auto - only mirroring
Install is easy. Takes 1-2 hrs. Tools and detailed instructions are included for either if you contact the emails above. US resellers made their own instructions. Makes it easy. Good luck!

Hey Guys,
I just bought a 2016 Mercedes CLS400. There was no SD Card in it when I brought it so my navigation isn't working.
So two questions:

1.Do I need to have an SD Card to get Apple Carplay to work?
2. Do I even have the "Command" system that is required to have Apple Carplay working? I have the huge "Ipad" looking screen in the middle. Also I have 2 USB Hubs. The second USB hub shows a phone and a screen. But every time I plug it in there, nothing happens. Lol, someone let me know please.

I think you just need the OBD actuator for CarPlay. Plenty of threads on this.
