Dealership wants $300 to check. Is there a cheaper way? Seems to just need charging. 2001 CLK430 CAb.

Why go to the dealer and get rip off. Go to any repair shop to get it check out. If your system have a leak, they will be able to see where's the leak coming from with a special dye color. And if it does not have a leak, you probably just need to refill the system.

It cost me 120 bucks to get the refidgerant refilled. There's really no need to go to the dealer for that.

Ummmm??? No offense there, but r134 doesn't just evaporate like water from a pool. If it needs to be recharged.... it probably had a leak! :D

Not true,
there's always some loss from the compressor. You can't get a perfect seal on something that has a shaft and pulley going outside the compession chamber.

recharge the system. slow leaks take about one to two months to lose pressure.
the shop also adds a green freon for leak detection. have read that evaporators
is the number one leaker of gas!! But their is a A/C stop leak fix for our cars !!!!
it is available comercialy and it works to a certain point. if the evaporator is shot,
or condenser is toast it wont help. works on microscopic holes.
