Hi.
I have a 1995 E280 (w124).
I have a a noise in my AC-compressor (I am 90% sure this "clicking noice" is from the AC-compressor).
Is this a normal failure? Can I rebiuld it, or do I have to buy a new one?
Are the cheap AC-compressors on ebay OK, or should I get an OEM (I have not checked how much they cost, but I have a fealing thay are expensive).
Thanks!

- First make sure the issue is actually A/C compressor.
- Does the noise occur when A/C is turned off ?
- It could be clutch bearing, just remove the V belt and check for compressor pulley play.

Yes you can rebuild compressor if it is clutch bearing or leaking seal. You can get the kits from here Automobile Air Conditioning Parts of Tucson Arizona, Century Auto Air, AC Parts, AC Service and Hoses, centuryautoair.com. Rebuilt compressor from reputed source on Ebay should be fine too.

That sound may be the tensioner shock.
Put a screwdriver on the compressor, and then to your ear (poor mans stethoscope)
Listen if sound is compressor.
Also, try to wedge the shock end, and look for play in the rubber fitting in the shock.
when the rubber inserts in the shock wear, it causes it to rattle about.
Worth a look....

You mean the shock/spring that holds the long V-belt tight, right (or is there another shock related to the AC-compressor)?
Yep, that's the one. But it only dampens the tensioner. The tensioner keeps belt tight. the shock is there to take up for when the compressor kicks on it puts more tension on the belt.

I took the belt off, could not feal any play in the pulley.
look for play in the rubber fitting in the shock.
I can not find a shock absober for my belt... I guess it is built into the tensioner (?). I can not feal any play in the tensioner either, so I do not think the noise is coming from there.
Probably internal compressor noise then..

Where I live it is rather cold now, so the compressor does not start (I can not make the noise appear now).
Is there a way I can force the AC-compressor to start, so I can troubleshoot before the weather gets hotter?
Thanks.

I am not sure if this will work, but you need to bridge the circut to make the compressor engage, try removing the kickdown switch relay which is located behimd the battery, there's a blak splash guard, behind it there's a black relay, probably written on it 6zyl. kickdown, remove it and put it aside. then turn your AC on, that might the compressor.
