Twice now I've seen these warning lights, "ABS" & "BAS/ESP" on my 2001 E320 dash.

Doesn't seem to affect driveability or braking, and if I turn engine off -> on, the warning dissapears.

Suggestions??

The procedure to reset the sensor is in the owner's manual but in case if you don't have it, you just turn the steering wheel right to left lock to lock several times.

Also make sure that the charging system is working properly. If the alternator has intermittent problems you will have low voltage conditions that will affect the operation of the ABS/BAS circuits, when you are driving.

It could also be bad connections at the BAS module which requires a proper scanner to access and read the codes (MB SDS, Snap ON, Delphi, etc.....)from the 38 pin diagnostic connector.

my car will have this 'warning light issue' during the winter when i use the rear window defroster ... obviously in my case it's a voltage issue.

A scan may be needed. In my case, the codes were not too meaningful, and the shop that did the scan had no clue what they meant! It turned out to be a bad ABS pump. The system checks that it is working when you first start car. If it fails test, the lights come on. It's sometimes worn or dirty brushes in the pump motor. Not sure about 2001, but on 98/99 the motor is sealed and not serviceable. On later cars like MLs the motor could be serviced. You can check the motor by having someone start car from cold in morning while you listen to ABS pump motor using stethoscope or similar. You should hear pump run momentarily right after engine is started.

BTW, I did the stop light switch first. Seems from posts here that it is sometimes the problem. Cheap fix anyway.

A clue to the problem would be to explain WHEN the lights come on. Do they come on and stay on when you insert the key and you start the car ? Do they come on when you press the brake pedal ? Do they come on randomly when driving and turning off later on ? Sometimes signals from the the wheel sensor get interrupted due to some dirt or mechanical issues. A scan, and a good mechanic should be able to find what is going on.

So, it seems to be an issue with the steering wheel sensor. The warning lights are becoming more frequent, approx once every 4 -> 5 weeks. A manual reset (turning the steering wheel full-lock, left to right a couple of times, followed by shutting engine off/on clears the warning lights). None of my local indy shops have a MB scanner, so I can't read codes unless I pay a dealer - which I don't really want to do yet...

Warning lights come on randomly after engine is started. Frequency is now at about once per month. I clear lights by manually resetting the steering wheel sensor, and restarting the engine.
