Hi Forum,

I'm about to do valve covers and plug o-rings on my 92" R129 M119 engine. While we are in there should we replace anything else for good measure. The car has about 120,000 Miles on it.

I read the timing chain rails can be done with just the valve covers off (unlike BMW where you basically have to drop the whole engine out). Also the Valve oil tubes. Since mine is a old version i believe they are metal and aren't cracked, but o-rings maybe?

please let me know
Thanks

S.

I am the type that says.
If its not broken.
Don't fix.

If you have no tic, tac, problems....
Just replace the leaking gaskets, get new screw crush washers.

Replacing the 0rings mean playing with the CAMS.
Are you sure you want to go there?
For me not a big deal, but why?

Broken rails, most likely mean stretched chain, etc.

I would replace the plugs F8DC4 best, & cheap.
That's it.

I had bad luck with aftermarket gaskets, they leaked. Autohauseaz gave my money back.
Got them from the dealer.
Were softer, no leaks. :)

aam.

They have 2 versions of gaskets - one for the 90-95 and one for the 96-98 - make sure they give you the earlier version

As far as the "timing chain rails"- if you are talking that cover over the top of the chain - that isn't really a rail - it just keeps the oil from hitting the top of the valve cover. It is true that to change the oil tubes the thing will be brittle from heat/age when you take it off (you have to) but since you don't have to take yours off I would leave it alone.

Don't over tighten the valve cover bolts - about 10Nm is all you want. I learned the hard way with my old 300E. Learned about helicoils :wink

Yes, on the O-rings for the tubes - leave them alone. Only time you have to replace them is if you pull the tubes out. If you don't pull the tubes out you don't have to pull off the cam (tower?) - just put the new gaskets on - if putting in new plugs make sure you use compressed air to blow out the recesses (I don't have a compressor - I use the canned compressed air)

Agree with the others - just get a factory set of gaskets at the dealer

Ahaaaaa...
That's not Greek, it's Jewish.

So you you do understand Greek....

Yes,
I didn't fully explain, like what the rails are for.
I just jumped in to the chain, breaking the rails, then the right valve cover top.....

Sometimes I talk/write a lot, sometimes I don't.
About my spelling.... Lets not go there. Hahaha.

I will let you in to a secret.
There are times that I don't understand.

Me. ;)

aam.
