I have my eye on 2 wagons this weekend. I have to choose one.

Keep in mind i havent had a inspection done yet of the usual:
Spring perches
brakes
transmission etc...
Just would like anyones opinion on which one is more likely to stay away from.

1. 1998 4matic 101k miles.
Extremely Clean in and out. No rust visible. $5k

2. 2001 2WD 145K miles. Spotless Int. Some very minor rust spots visible on the back hatch inder the MB emblem. $5k

Unfortunately my budjet is only $5k

I will do the inspection on both today and tmrrw.
Thanks in advance.

2001 has manual shift mode, softer seats and more airbags. 4matic will not have spring perch issues but will be slower and infinitely more snow capable. good luck.

Since you live in NY and will see some snow I agree get the 4matic one. Especially since the other one has some rust issues. How clean are they under the hood? That usually says a lot about how they were cared for. I tend to look for cars which look as close to spotless underhood as well as underneath since those things usually mean no leaks!

98 4matic

I have the 1998 4matic wagon...absolutely love it! 4matic is a bonus for your climate. You will need to address the cv boots at 130000-150000 kilometers but a doable DIY job for 30 bucks a side. Mine eats tires for some reason but a beautiul ride..

Thanks for the reply. They both look pretty clean and dry underneath the hood. The 01 2wd drove like dream. I was so tempted to hand over the cash right there. Also Love the facelift. But I kno the 4matic would be better. gotta check out one more tmrrw. 2000 4matic in Bordeaux red..132k.

Make sure you like the red. I was dealing on purchasing one on ebay and it sure look beautifully on pictures, than spotted one on the street. My excitement about rare color went down to 0.
I will not even say, that the linked wagon besides visible damages doesn't shine like OEM paint.

The four-matic comes with its own set of problems, I own a 2wd 01 wagon and it is a much better car than say my ML. The only issues I have had is rust under the doors, and a spot by the rear wiper. The mechanicals are good other than rear door regulators, a directional switch, bad mirror, the accelerator sensor, and the engine pulley. The 01 had free included maintenance during the warranty period, the trans fluid should have been changed at least every 50k, and spark plugs at 100k.
As to snow my 85 300TDT, had no issues (2wd) and I never had snow tires for Chicago and Wisconsin, I have never had my 01 in snow, but I drove a 01 in Europe (where rental cars get snow tires in the winter) and using the winter setting (transmission) had no issues.

So what's the deal with this Bordeaux Red?? Did you buy it? I was thinking to go look at it, anything wrong with it?

Cars for Sale: 2000 Mercedes-Benz E320 4MATIC AWD Wagon in Teterboro, NJ 07608: Wagon Details - 286168372 - AutoTrader.com
Had my tech put it on the computer and it had transmission codes. And a bad left cat. Plus when i drove it the trans seemed to slip into 2nd gear. Pretty clean other than the front bumper and side rocker panel crack. But im afraid of the codes.
