Can anyone help me with a problem with exhaust part numbers for a UK supplied 1989 500 SEC? I've got some bits but they don't seem to fit properly. The first centre section (the bit that joins onto the downpipes from the engine) I have got does not fit properly as the silencer box contacts the heat sheild when it shouldn't. The next section (the bit that splits into two) won't fit because the front pipes from it seem to be too long placing it too far back for the mounts on the underside of the body.

Is anyone in a position to let me know the correct Mercedes parts numbers for these two parts for my car? None of the dealers I've asked will tell me the part numbers so I can't tell if one, or both, of them are wrong.

If it's a help the VIN of my car is WDB1260442A484266

Cheers,

J.

Right, finally had to go to the dealers and buy expensive merc original parts as nothing else would fit. However, the parts supplied to my mechanic from the dealer do not have the same part numbers as in the link provided by DarkOne.

The section that splits into the two cushion shaped parts should be part number 126.490.3915 but the dealer has supplied a part number 126.490.5815. It is physically identical to the one that came off, except, that it is silver in colour, not black. Is this the reason for the part number change, perhaps?

Car is back to being whisper quiet, almost a shame to get rid of the lovely V8 grumble because of the broken exhaust - prefereable to stinking of fumes every time you drive the car though.

Personally, I don't bother replacing the kidney beans (as I like to call them). They are expensive, restrictive and heavy. Much prefer a set of standard pipes straight though.

The mix up would have been early w126 and late w126 exhaust pieces....on the pre 86 w126 for example, the centre section has much longer pipes...on the post 85 w126 modesl, the centre 2box section is small with very short piping.

The change from the early model to the later one didn't cause us any problems. The main problem was that those "kidney bean" bits actually come in 3 different part numbers, one part for the SEC, one for the SE and another for the SEL. The one I originlly got off an internet dealer was actually the one for the SEL and was too long. They actually have it listed as being for all three cars when it's only an SEL part.

The other problem was that the part ahead of that - the bit where both pipes run into a small silencer box - I got from another after market supplier and also didn't fit. It wasn't that it wqas the wrong part, as such, just that it was badly made. In the end I had to get that from Merc as well. Even the dealers couldn't decide whether that part was supposed to have a box in it - one said it did, the other not. When it eventually turned up it did.

In the event, the only non-Merc parts that fit were the front down-pipes.

Does this result in a change in performance, noise, etc?
