Would a 1979 300D NA use the same lift pump as a 1985 300D?

ok so here's why I asked. There's an '85 300D in my area that currently doesn't run and is going for dirt cheap. The add says it's got a bad lift pump. My question is what are the odds of this actually being the problem and is there any way I can rig it to drive it home?

If they say lift pump, read "injection pump and/or low compression"

Bring one along when you go look at the car, it takes about 15 minutes to install one if he'll let you do it.

I looked at at least 7 300D's before I bought my 78, one guy claimed his just needed glow plugs and it turns out the IP was pumping at about 8psi and the compression on 3 cylinders was below 200psi...

Another claimed the lift pump was bad so it wouldn't start and that car had a broken timing chain...

Some people are just dicks and will do whatever they feel is necessary to sell a car or anything else for that matter. BUYER BEWARE

Fixing a broken car in front of the seller right after you bought it is the most satisfying thing you can do! Especially when they tell you "exactly" what's wrong with it and they're totally clueless.

I think if I do get it I'll just rent a flatbed trailer for $44 and tow it home.... save the time and hassle of trying to make something run without the proper tools. I didn't really think it was the lift pump, since their usually pretty reliable. I was figuring on blocked strainer or fuel filters..... perhaps bad glow plugs and the owner thinking it was not getting fuel. I'll give the guy a call and we'll see.... For a non running benz that the add said was heading for the crushers, do you think $150 bucks would be insulting to offer?

Assuming it's in reasonable shape what do you think I could expect from parting it.... I just don't want to make a bad investment here

I would offer him prolly 300-500 if it was bought in a non-running condition.
