Most R107/C107s I see tend to have a patch on the A-pillars' rubber seals where the rear view mirrors touch.

Can anyone recommend what products I need to buy to create a suitable repair? Mine are perished.

(I did speak to an SL specialist about new seals for this area but he said it's a massive pig of a job and recommended the patch repair.)

It's not a massive pig of a job - more a little piglet that has to be watched closely.

There's nothing particularly hard about it, you just need three hands. Sometimes four. And a couple of beers after. The weather seal goes down the inner frame, where it lines up to the window glass, up over the top, and then down the front side, where the chrome trim strip goes. It took me about an hour per side, a phillips head screwdriver, a teflon spatula from the kitchen, and a dinner out to stop the griping about the teflon spatula.

Thanks for the reply. That's quite encouraging. Would prefer to replace them than to patch them. No rivets to drill out or anything like that? I'm presuming there's some adhesive involved.

You presume incorrectly, sir. It's all screws and press-fit.

The chrome trim piece comes off with phillips head screws that are hidden under the rubber seal. The side that runs down the windows glass is pressed into a channel. The fiddly part is keeping the chrome trim piece aligned in the rubber seal's pocket while screwing the phillips screws back in, and keeping an almost invisible little rubber line properly lined up in the recess at the back. There's some room for adjustment if you keep the phillips screws loose and then tighten them down after everything is in place.

So if you only replace the rubbers it is only some adhesive you need.....and a nice spatula.:thumbsup:

Thanks for the extra info. I wonder what the 'specialist' was talking about. Was a guy from 'the SL shop'. He told me it takes a day to replace these things. Perhaps it was the sales guy I was speaking to and he simply has no idea.

I this the area you are calling a patch? It is original on the lower part of the seal. As you can see the cloth cover on my 560 is also deteriorating.

Don't be, adhesive is not mandatory. You can do without. I used only a little because mine had a little to it when I removed them. The new ones should have a good fit so really not necessary.

No adhesive is necessary if you are replacing the entire seal.
Thanks for that useful link. Mentions the part numbers as well which is helpful (the numbers I have are wrong. Will have to double check).

Ah. I was given incorrect information by the guy from the SL shop. He told me loads of SLs have this piece of cloth because the rubber had worn and using a cloth patch was how to repair them.

LOL. He didn't know what he was talking about. And that's another good reason not to use that shop for seal repair - the only seals that don't have the cloth are aftermarket. I bought aftermarket to begin with and exchanged them (take a deep breath and hold it when they tell you the price for a couple of little pieces of rubber) with MB seals after a few months. The rubber on the aftermarket was hard, didn't get a good window seal, and make closing my door with the window up an adventure.

It is quite common to see fabric tape repairs on rubber door seals. My SL had it in several places before I replaced the seals. The SL shop guy was probably talking about the tapes. I don't know where you find the tape, but I did come across this neat UK site with products to mend just about anything!

Christ they're expensive. Jesus. £163 for the pair (around $260).
Does that sound about right?
