A new noise... any ideas?

Our 95 E320 wagon has begun to make a new noise. The noise is a very low pitched sound -- almost sounds like a subwoofer at 30hz. No grinding, just a smooth very low frequency tone. The sound only appears while on the freeway at 50+ miles per hour when LETTING OFF THE GAS. It is loudest when doing this at 70+ mph. The very second I engage acceleration, the sound completely disappears. Any ideas? Drive shaft? Rear diff? Trans?

If anyone knows about health problems it's me, so I sympathize.

On the noise, check the diff oil, maybe drain and refill with fresh.

Have you ever serviced the diff, MB recommends every 30K on
the older cars. I wouldn't push it past 60K
Reread Clark's post, servicing the diff means R&R diff fluid.
Yes, that's right.

I drain the diff, removing the fill plug first, then the drain so you get nice flow.

Then I'll squeeze a little fresh lube in to flush out as much old oil as possible.

Reinstall drain plug and fill it up until it just starts to drool out.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. Spec is 75W85, but the 75W90 is OK
