A must see for W140 transmission rebuild

This website shows the rebuilding of the 772.3 and 772.4 transmission. I have the 772.3 in my 92 500SEL. I found it very helpful to have an idea of what is involved in rebuilding a trans because I have to make the decision to either rebuild mine or get a factory remanufactured trans. Unless you have a lot of confidence in your trans. person I would go for the factory one with the 2 year warranty considering the complexity of this job. Once you reach the website click on Total Tech Database in the left column. Select Mercedes as the model then click on "722.3 and 722.4 Series". A menu will appear in this left column, click on any of the topic especially the "Rebuild Minimums" to see many pictures and detailed descriptions of a rebuild job.
Website: www.transonline.com
i have a 92 400se and I plan on having my 100,000.00 mile transmission service done. what kind of price ar we talking for a tranny rebuild Fred?
So, what did it cost?

I have a 92 500sel,and it stopped going into reverse a week ago. So far, I've done nothing - waiting for the right time and price. Can't really afford to pay the $6K for a rebuild (I'm told).

about your tranny

I had a 79 450SEL and it stopped going into reverse and I took it to my mechanic and he replaced a seal and everything was fine, may be the same with your car, check into it
MUST SEE FOR W140 & 300D 300SD Transmission Rebuilding

This website benzproducts.com has actual DVD's on doing these rebuilds, very hard to find anything like this, nothing available from Mercedes. They also have other Benz related DVD's it's benzproducts.com

I have it from a very reliable and knowledgeable source that the reverse problem is due to a fault with the reverse clutch friction material being a 'wet mix friction material' that eroded faster than being worn off. He also said the replacements use a bonded paper material like all of the other frictions in the transmission.

He said once out of the car it's a few hours to complete repairs and about $100 in parts. Further, on the transmissions that he has repaired he said that he doesn't bother replacing forward frictions anymore because they've been in good shape and he can still read the part numbers stamped in the friction surface.

Take away from it what you will but I can't afford to fork over thousands when it's likely that I can repair it myself for a fraction of the expense. Besides, it's a good learning experience and that's one reason I built that big garage.
