Hey guys, I was wondering if you all could help me answer a few questions about my friends '79 230GE.

1. Is the rear locker manually activated? (i.e- lock when I push a button or pull a lever?)

2. Can the locker be activated in 2WD or only 4LO and 4HI?

3. Can I get a locker for the front axle?

4. Do all of the 79's come with A/C standard?

Thxs in advance for all the help and info ...

RE: A few questions about a 79 230G ...

1.) Yes - Lever
2.) Any position of the TC.
3.) Buy a whole new axle.
4.) No. It was not even available as a factory option until 1981.

If it's a 1979, it's not a GE. It's a 230G - carbureted. If it is indeed a 230GE - fuel injected, it's not a 1979. Fuel injection on the 230 didn't show up until 1982.

The original 230G was 90 or 120 HP, depending on which engine (high or low compression) was ordered.

Arnd has a very good website for this information, but it appears to be down right now.

Is that the carburetor engine?
If it's a 1979, it will most certainly be. The fuel injected GE version wasn't available until 1982.

So thats the engine we had in the early 230 Gs in Berlin great little engine even with the lower bhp and easy to fix.
I bought one recently then swapped it for the later GE model I have now.

There were two different 230G engines prior to the 230GE. One of the two was low compression (and HP) and the other was high compression - 90 HP, I think.

RE: a very thirsty engine....

From my experience, mine is still a 230 carburetor, however the original engine has been replaced by a w123 230 sedan, so i don't know if it is a high or low compression, i think it s a 90 HP (it used to be[:D]) which is delivering not more than 60 hp now (it has 100K) , very thirsty engine, very slow, but extremely reliable and easy/cheap to fix.
