Well guys about 8 months ago we bought this BaT 560 SEC from the buyer here in the PNW. Here is the original BaT listing. 57k-Mile Euro 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC . After acquiring this car I found many fundamental issues that needed attention. Once in my possession I noticed some minuscule little bumps in the paint. Hood, roof and trunk lid. Yikes the car had some paintwork. Well after consulting with my longtime friend and SEMA award winning paint and body specialist it was determined the car had indeed had those body parts repainted. At this point I decided I wasn't going to put my name on it until it was "right"! Now is when the story gets interesting and "expensive". We began sanding all the panels mentioned only to find these area's had been painted a couple of times. Both of the previous painting attempts were not by genuine professionals but from some form of "quick and cheap". We found that the first repaint involved a contaminated primer which only grew during time. We sanded and sanded and sanded until we got back to the original base coat/primer. BTW these are really large cars! I commissioned my painter to "make the car correct". Well after weeks of part-time sanding I had him look at what we had and he immediately said "more sanding". Dayumm, this was getting old. So another 10 hours (2 men) of sanding began. We removed everything, rear window, mirrors, all bumpers, cladding, lights, sunroof seal and panel, door handles, All window trim and even the thin chrome trim from the A pillar to the C pillar. Car was stripped of everything that was possible to remove. Keep in mind that this car was never in an accident and "Brandon" the expert spent over 40 hours working the body panels to be "perfect". He mentioned that US cars are never perfect from the factory and that this car was a great unadulterated example. It needed some love. The car is now completely painted with the proper German Glasurit paint. ($1600 in materials). So now the exterior is absolutely stunning and the list of interior "short cuts/hacks" are being addressed. 3 months of searching for correct replacement interior bits has provided all the period correct components are in house. As this will become a long thread there is much more to come. The goal is to bring back an epic 300hp Gen2 SEC to a new level of perfection and passion. Yes the car will remain stock as it was produced in 1990 although I am a bit hesitant to install the original Becker radio. So much goodness available today and these old radios weren't that great 30 years ago. Will I make a bunch of money on this car? No way. Will it become an epic restoration? Yes. BTW, the car has been certified by DOT/EPA and has a California CARB sticker in the door jam. As we all enjoy pics, here are a few. Thanks to everyone for their support over the years and the wealth of information here on BenzWorld. Mike
