What is the difference between CE vs. E, and why is there A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, D-Class, and S-Class? Also, what is a SE vs. SEL? :confused:

The C designation refers to coupes. There are more classes than just those, they all relate to different size/type models (van/sedan/roadster), and the L designates a long wheelbase model.

CE vs. E - CE is a coupe, E is sedan, TE is a wagon
A-Class - crossover thingy we don't get in USA
B-Class - crossover thingy we don't get in USA
C-Class - the smallest body style; currently either a sedan or wagon
E-Class - next size up (middle); currently a sedan or wagon
D-Class - ?
S-Class - the mack-daddy of MBs; large and luxurious; only a sedan.
SE is a short S-Class, SEL is a long S-Class

There's still:
CLK - a coupe based on the E
SLK - convertible based on the C
SL - convertible
CL - coupe version of the S
GLK - mini SUV soon to come out
ML - mid-sized SUV
GL - large-sized SUV
R - weird car/van/SUV thing

Cripes - did I miss any?

And you Yanks aren't missing much by not getting these. I had a B150 5-speed as a rental car in Switzerland ~1 year ago, and it's everything a MB shouldn't be--uncomfortable seats, loud, buzzy engine, lots of wind noise at highway speeds and front-wheel drive.

"CLK - a coupe based on the E"

I think the CLK is based on the C. The old coupés (pre-1997) were based on the W124 E chassis.

Mercedes-Benz model overview
You're correct. It's based on the C, but styled to look like an E so MB can justify charging E-class prices for it. :)

You missed the G-Klasse, or Geländewagen. It's MB's serious sport-utility vehicle, used by militaries across Europe and available in the US as the G500 and G55 AMG. It's one of the few vehicles sold in the US with three locking differentials.

You should mention that TE, SD, SE, SEL, CE, CD and a few others are no longer used on current Mercedes vehicles. We don't call a 2008 S500 an 'S500 SEL' or something like that. They are simply named S500.

That "mack daddy" you mentioned? Remember, the S classe was not just a sedan.
There was of course, for one, the 560 SEC.
560 = 5.6 Litre
S = S klasse (mack daddy)
E = Einspritzen (fuel injection)
C = Coupe
Mercedes has a history of S class coupes and convertibles, some of them now more valuable then our homes.
Oh, BTW....your car? Gorgeous color!

So, the S-Class is the flagship car then? Thank you for breaking it down like that. Also thank you about my car, I <3 it! :D

:thumbsup:theres also the Unimog, which was once used by I think the african military. Its an all out off road beast. Best thing to do though is go through every class on the forums, and most have a pictures thread as a sticky. Look through and you will learn what ever class looks like. Thats what I did. :thumbsup: hope this helps. Nice car and good luck, those were the quickest and lightest w124's, invest in radar detector
